Gerald V. Smolinski, 86, of Severna Park, Maryland passed away on January 4, 2024. Gerry was predeceased by his wife, Janet and is survived by his sons James (Ann) and Matthew (Meighan), and two grandchildren Brendan and Catie Smolinski.
He was raised in East Baltimore. Upon graduation from Polytechnic High School, he attended Johns Hopkins University where he graduated with both a B.A and M.A. in History. He was in the Marines during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During different parts of his career, he served as a manager, salesman, and educator. After receiving his B.A. he worked in Baltimore as a teacher. He met his wife of 59 years, Janet Smolinski (nee Stivarius) through the Hopkins community while he was teaching high school in Baltimore City. He and Janet stayed in the Baltimore area, where they built a home, were active in their community, and raised two sons.
Gerald worked for a dozen years at The Baltimore Sun as Public Affairs Manager and the corporate voice of the newspaper. Later, Gerry held executive positions in several management consulting firms. Upon retirement, he got his dream job as co-owner in Annapolis Home Brew, where he was able to take a life-long appreciation of beer to a different level. In retirement, he stayed involved with The Baltimore Sun Retiree Association, serving as treasurer.
Gerry was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan. While he appreciated the 2023 Baltimore baseball and football seasons immensely, he also had deep affections for the stories and deep histories behind the games. By the time of his passing, he had forgiven the Colts. He and Janet were also devoted travelers who had visited all 50 states, six continents, and more than 20 countries. In addition to Baltimore sports, travel, and beer, he loved his dogs. A huge fan of large dogs, labradors specifically, Gerry was particularly kind to animals. Besides his sons and grandchildren, he is survived by his labrador Susy.
A combined memorial service will be held April 20, 2024 in celebration of Gerry's and Janet’s lives.
