Beverly Pearl Trent Childers was born on January 2, 1941, in Gilbert, West Virginia, the second of two daughters of Druey Halsey Trent and Judy Hazel Hatfield Trent. She enjoyed a happy childhood in the beautiful West Virginia mountains and developed an early love of the outdoors. A skilled markswoman with her .22 rifle, she often joined her father at hunting, who bragged she could “shoot the eye out of a copperhead from 50 yards”. Beverly and her future husband, Bobby, even considered target practice (shooting rats) at the local dump a memorable date night.
In school, Beverly excelled academically, particularly in English, and graduated ranked fourth in her class. It was during these years that she met her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bobby” Thomas Childers. The two married on Christmas Day, 1958, and later attended Concord College together, graduating in 1960.
Following graduation, Beverly began her career as a middle school English teacher in Maryland. She and Bobby welcomed three children into their lives: Gregory Michael (born June 29, 1964), Tessa Michelle (born February 19, 1969), and Kevin Matthew (born February 3, 1971). Becoming a mother was Beverly’s greatest joy, and she dedicated herself fully to raising her family.
Once her children were in school, Beverly continued to pursue her desire to nurture and teach young children. She opened a daycare, where she poured her love and energy into caring for countless little ones. She had a natural gift with children, and every baby seemed to be drawn to her warmth and kindness. She became affectionately known as Mimi to all the children she cared for and loved.
Beverly and Bobby shared a love for the ocean and cherished their time together in Ocean City, creating countless memories with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Dorothy Helen Mlekush. She is survived by her three children—Greg, Tessa, and Kevin—her three grandchildren, Jessica, Jaclyn, and John, and her four great-grandchildren, Juliana, Gunner, Hayden, and Bodhi.
Beverly also treasured many lifelong friendships, including Barbara Fox, Anita Buchanan, , Marion Ellis, Linda Endicott, Patty Harless, Jerry and Carol Rettig, Roxanne and Daryl Ford, Ricky and Carol Anderson, Pat Carter, Melissa Lindsay, and Chris, Marsha, and David Karp — among many others whose lives were touched by her love and kindness.
Beverly will be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a cherished friend, and a woman whose warmth, humor, and strength left an enduring mark on all who knew her.
